Multi Layering
Definitions
The WIMP format is still the most dominant layout in both desk-top and mobile devices despite many well known drawbacks, such as a lack of immediate overview, the need to frequently switch between different windows and the requirement for physical interaction using a mouse or stylus. The overall aim of this course module is to move away from the WIMP format and explore alternative approaches for visualising screen-based information which draw on other design traditions such as poster design, maps, colloquial graphics and layered information. These approaches attempt to explore a visual structure for interfaces which break the traditional boundaries of GUI design.
The design
